Biogas Production Simulation from VOCs in Anaerobic Bioscrubber

Introduction

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are a large group of organic compounds that easily evaporate at room temperature. These compounds are produced in various industries, including painting, printing, pharmaceuticals, and chemical manufacturing, and can have harmful effects on human health and the environment. One effective method for removing VOCs from gas streams is the use of anaerobic bioscrubbers. In this process, anaerobic microorganisms utilize VOCs as a carbon and energy source, breaking down these compounds and ultimately producing biogas.

Process Description

A new approach was implemented to simulate the anaerobic reactor, allowing its connection to the scrubber. The model was calibrated and validated using data from an industrial sample that converted pollutant gases containing VOCs into bioenergy for over a year, with an average daily concentration of 1129 mg of carbon per cubic meter. The scrubber achieved a removal efficiency between 83% and 93%, successfully predicted with an average absolute relative error of 5.2 ± 0.08% using a mean theoretical plate height of 1.05 ± 0.08 meters and 1.37 ± 0.11 meters for each of the two types of commercial packing materials used.

For example, the average absolute error between the experimental biogas production and model values was 19.6 ± 18.9%. This model demonstrated its effectiveness as a predictive and design aid tool, leading to time and cost savings for professionals. Furthermore, the proposed approach can be extended to other bioprocesses involving unit operations.
